Lot 293: A Traditional Hand Drum with Hair-on Animal Hide
A traditional hand percussion frame drum of circular form. The instrument is constructed with a natural animal hide head stretched over an internal wooden frame. The reverse of the drum reveals the underside of the hide, which retains a coarse coating of reddish-brown and white hair. The skin is secured to the frame using a continuous whip-stitch lacing method with a natural fiber cord, terminating in a hand-tied knot. The playing surface exhibits a textured, scraped finish characteristic of traditionally prepared rawhide.
Condition report:
The drum head shows signs of historical use and age, including extensive surface discolouration, staining, and abrasions across the playing area. The reverse hide surface exhibits patches of hair loss. The lacing remains structurally intact but shows significant fraying and wear to the fibers, particularly adjacent to the knot. There is no case or beater supplied with this lot.
