Lot 292: A Pair of East African Horn Vessels with Woven Fiber and Leather Decoration
A pair of hollowed animal horns of curved form, featuring natural mottled tones transitioning from cream at the base to polished black at the tips. The vessels are embellished with bands of reddish-brown leather and woven fiber strips displaying a repeating stepped geometric pattern in dark and light tones. One vessel is further detailed with a broad central wrap of animal hide. Both pieces are fitted with leather cords for suspension. A series of incised characters is visible on the surface of one horn, reading C R U N I S.
Condition report:
The horns show signs of handling and age. There are surface abrasions and minor scratches to the polished horn bodies (photo 1). The leather bands show edge wear and signs of desiccation. The animal hide wrap on one vessel is wrinkled with some surface accumulation (photo 3). The interior of the horns shows the fibrous texture of the natural core removal (photo 4).
