Lot 548: A Wood Bros Old Charm Oak Two Piece Welsh Dresser
Not sold
A two piece Welsh dresser constructed from oak with a medium-dark stained finish. The upper section comprises a plate rack with two fixed shelves featuring grooved plate stands, supported by shaped, scroll-cut side panels and a top frieze decorated with a repeating carved lunette pattern. The base section features three central drawers with vertical flute carving, flanked by two cupboard doors. The doors contain recessed panels with relief-carved heraldic motifs depicting a crest flanked by two birds. A ribbon scroll within the carving on the right-hand door bears the legend FIDE CONSTANS. The base is supported by two turned bulbous pillars connected by a front stretcher rail. The unit is fitted with antiqued metal ring-pull handles and decorative escutcheons. The drawer interiors and back panels are constructed from solid wood sections. No maker’s labels or signatures are visible, however the heraldic carving and motto are characteristic of Wood Bros furniture.
Condition report:
The dresser shows visible surface wear and finish loss, particularly along the edges of the stretcher rail, the base plinth, and the bottom edges of the side panels (photo 1). Minor white paint splatters are present on the side of the base unit (photo 1). The oak surfaces show natural grain variation and minor scuffs from use. All original hardware is present and appears functional. The upper rack and base unit are structurally sound.
