Lot 542: A French Provincial Style Marble Topped Side Table
Not sold
A side table in the French Provincial style, featuring a rectangular marble top with a rounded bullnose edge. The top is composed of a natural stone slab with a cream and peach-toned ground, decorated with grey and dark grey veining. The wooden frame is finished with a cream-coloured crackle-glaze effect. The apron is decorated with high-relief carvings of roses and foliage, picked out in pastel shades of pink, yellow, and green. The piece stands on four tapered, turned legs, each featuring a fluted collar with gilded highlights and ending in feet decorated with a green and gold acanthus leaf motif. The corner blocks are further embellished with gilded floral rosettes. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The marble top shows signs of age and handling, with numerous surface scratches and small areas of pitting visible across the surface (photo 2). The veining includes natural inclusions and fine fissures. The painted frame features an intentional, heavy craquelure finish throughout. There is visible wear and paint loss to the gilded highlights on the floral carvings and significant paint loss to the lower portions of the legs and feet (photo 1). The carved elements appear structurally intact.
