Lot 54: A Carved Oak Jacobean Revival Sideboard with Barley Twist Legs
Not sold
A Jacobean Revival sideboard constructed from oak. The rectangular top features a gallery back with a central raised pediment decorated with a hand-carved scrolling foliate and diamond motif. The lower section comprises two frieze drawers, each fitted with two ornate drop-ring handles on decorative backplates, positioned above two cupboard doors flanking a central fixed panel. The central panel repeats the scrolling foliate and diamond carving found on the gallery, while the cupboard doors feature recessed panels and visible keyholes. The carcass is supported by four barley-twist front legs and square-section rear legs, all joined by a peripheral box stretcher. The back of the piece is finished with a three-panel construction. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The sideboard shows signs of significant use and environmental exposure. The top surface has extensive scratching, fading, and water staining across its width (photo 3). A vertical split is visible in the grain of the top surface on the right-hand side (photo 3). The front finish is uneven with significant wear to the stain, particularly around the drawer edges and the lower panels (photo 1). The central carved panel shows signs of drying and wood separation (photo 2). There are various scuffs, small chips, and losses to the finish on the barley-twist legs and the peripheral stretcher (photo 1). No keys are present for the cupboard doors.
