Lot 535: A Hand-Carved Hardwood Sculpture of a Recumbent Mastiff

A large-scale hand-carved hardwood sculpture depicting a recumbent dog, rendered in the form of a mastiff or bulldog. The figure is carved from a warm-toned timber with a prominent natural grain, featuring dark-stained accents to the ears, eyes, nose, paws, and tail. The dog is portrayed in a resting position with the head turned towards the right, characterized by deep, stylised gouge-work that defines the folds of the face, neck, and body. The eyes are inset with dark material to provide contrast. The sculpture is an integral piece without a separate plinth or base. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
