Lot 11: A Pair of Large Hand-Painted Sovereign Baluster Vases and Lids
Sold for: £95
A pair of large porcelain baluster vases and domed lids, each featuring a hand-painted fruit study decoration. The bodies and lids are decorated with motifs of peaches, grapes, and blackberries against a stippled multi-coloured background. Each lid is flanged and surmounted by a gilt ball finial. One vase bears a hand-painted signature in the lower right of the fruit study reading A. MELLOR. The base of each vase features two green printed marks. The first is a crown device surrounded by the legend HAND PAINTED CHINA BY STAFFORDSHIRE CRAFTSMEN COLLECTORS PIECE. The second mark, partially overlapping, consists of a crown over a stylised W above the legend BAREUTHER WALDSASSEN BAVARIA-GERMANY, accompanied by the number 612. An impressed four-digit number is also visible on the underside of one base. The rims and finials are finished with gilding.
Height: 46 cm.
Condition report:
The vases and lids are in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. There is minor shelf wear to the underside of the flared bases and light rubbing to the gilding on the rims and finials consistent with handling (photo 1). The painted surfaces remain vibrant and intact.
