Lot 82: A Graduated Malachite Bead Necklace with White Metal Clasp
A graduated bead necklace composed of spherical malachite beads, each displaying characteristic deep green concentric banding and variegated patterns. The beads are arranged in size order, increasing towards a large central spherical bead. Each stone is individually knotted on a green cord, terminating in a white metal filigree-style box clasp. The necklace is constructed without spacers, allowing the polished surfaces of the malachite to sit adjacent to the knotted cord. A stamped mark is present on the reverse of the clasp, though the characters are not legible as a name or fineness. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The malachite beads exhibit a high polished finish with natural surface pits and mineral voids consistent with the stone\'s structure. Several beads show minor surface wear and light abrasions visible under close inspection. The green cord shows slight fraying and tension wear at the knots surrounding the three largest central beads (photo 2). The white metal clasp is functional, though it shows surface tarnishing and light scratches to the polished areas.
