Lot 68: Three Black Composition Lawn Bowls, Thomas Taylor and Taylor-Rolph Co
This lot comprises three individual lawn bowls constructed from black composition material. The first bowl features a decorative outer ring of repeating scalloped patterns and a central orange mount with a white and silver inlay. It is stamped with the manufacturer’s mark THOMAS TAYLOR (BOWLS) LTD, alongside the designations 2 – 6, FULL BIAS, and the serial number K1436. The second bowl is of plain form with concentric circular rings around a solid cream-coloured central mount. It bears the stamped marks THOMAS TAYLOR (BOWLS) LTD, 2 – 8, 2 FULL BIAS, and the serial number K3239. The third bowl, an older example, features a circular stamp reading TAYLOR-ROLPH CO, BIAS 3, LONDON, with the central mount stamped with the numeral 1. Each bowl shows varying degrees of surface wear and marking typical of use in lawn green bowling. These items do not constitute a matching set.
Condition report:
The collection shows evidence of extensive use and handling. The scalloped Thomas Taylor bowl (top left) exhibits visible surface scratches and minor abrasions across the crown and running surfaces. The plain Thomas Taylor bowl (top right) displays minor surface scuffs and light scratches. The Taylor-Rolph bowl (bottom) shows significant surface wear, including heavy scratching, scuffing, and some pitting to the composition material, resulting in a duller finish compared to the other two examples. No carrying case or bag is included.
