Lot 297: UK 1965 Elizabeth II Cupronickel Crown and Pre-Decimal Coin Set
A collection of UK pre-decimal coins housed in a red plastic presentation case with a transparent cover. The case features a silver-tone illustration of BUCKINGHAM PALACE and is titled HALF CROWN COINAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN. The set includes a large cupronickel commemorative crown featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and a portrait of Winston Churchill on the reverse, with the date 1965 struck to the left of the bust. The obverse legend reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. D. Additional denominations include a Half Crown, Florin, English Shilling, Scottish Shilling, Sixpence, brass Threepence, Penny, and Halfpenny. Each coin displays the first laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. The brass threepence is of dodecagonal form, while the remaining coins are circular. The copper-alloy penny and halfpenny feature the standing figure of Britannia and a sailing ship, respectively, on their reverses. The denominations are printed in white on the red card insert beneath each coin.
Condition report:
The coins exhibit high-grade surfaces consistent with uncirculated or near-uncirculated condition. The copper penny and halfpenny show significant dark brown environmental toning and surface oxidation. The cupronickel denominations, including the 1965 crown, display light surface tarnish and minor contact marks. The red plastic case shows light scuffing and surface wear to the silver-tone lettering on the exterior. The coins are held securely within the original plastic and card presentation housing.
