Lot 268: A Pair of Bank of England J. S. Fforde Ten Shilling Banknotes
A pair of Bank of England ten shilling banknotes, Series C, featuring sequential serial numbers. The obverse of each note displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II within an oval frame, alongside a seated Britannia motif within a circular frame to the left. The text is printed in reddish-brown ink and includes the promise I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF TEN SHILLINGS, the location LONDON, and the printed signature of the Chief Cashier J. S. FFORDE. The reverse depicts a seated figure of Britannia holding an olive branch and a trident, flanked by geometric lathe-work patterns and the denomination 10 SHILLINGS. The notes bear the sequential serial numbers B85N 527944 and B85N 527945 printed in black ink to the upper left and lower right corners.
Condition report:
Both banknotes appear in uncirculated condition with sharp corners and clean, straight edges. The paper remains crisp and bright with no visible folds, creases, tears, or pinholes. The ink remains vibrant and there are no signs of foxing, staining, or handling marks on the obverse or reverse surfaces. The notes are not housed in third-party grading capsules.
