Lot 239: A Collection of UK Commemorative Crowns, 1965-1981
A collection of five UK commemorative crowns, struck in white metal and housed in a blue card display within a clear plastic case. The obverses generally feature Arnold Machin’s second portrait of Elizabeth II with the legend ELIZABETH II D G REG F D. The 1965 issue features the portrait of Winston Churchill with the legend CHURCHILL on the reverse. The 1972 crown commemorates the Silver Wedding Anniversary, featuring a central EP monogram surrounded by the legend ELIZABETH AND PHILIP 20 NOVEMBER 1947-1972 on the reverse. The 1977 Silver Jubilee crown depicts the Queen on horseback with the date 1977 on the reverse. The 1980 crown celebrates the 80th birthday of the Queen Mother, with a central portrait surrounded by the legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER AUGUST 4th 1980 on the reverse. The 1981 crown commemorates the Royal Wedding, featuring the profile portraits of the Prince and Princess of Wales with the legend H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES AND LADY DIANA SPENCER 1981 on the reverse. The display card is printed with the title GREAT BRITAIN CROWNS in white block lettering. No maker’s marks or third-party grading certifications are visible.
Condition report:
The coins exhibit varying degrees of surface toning and environmental exposure. The 1965 Churchill and 1972 Silver Wedding crowns show visible tarnish and contact marks to both the obverse and reverse surfaces. The 1977, 1980, and 1981 issues show minor handling marks and light surface scratches consistent with storage. The blue card display is intact but shows minor fading. The protective plastic case shows fine surface scratches and scuffing to the exterior.
