Lot 198: UK 1797 George III Cartwheel Penny
A UK 1797 copper penny, known as a cartwheel issue due to its distinctive broad, raised rims. The obverse features the laureate and draped bust of King George III facing right, with the legend GEORGIUS III D G REX struck into the raised border. The reverse depicts the seated figure of Britannia facing left, holding a trident and olive branch, with a shield at her side and a small ship visible on the horizon. The legend BRITANNIA and the date 1797 are struck into the raised border. The coin is struck in copper and exhibits a dark brown patina across its surfaces. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The coin shows signs of heavy environmental exposure and significant circulation wear. The obverse exhibits extensive flattening to the laureate bust and legend, with numerous small nicks, bruises, and scratches present on the raised rim. The reverse shows similar heavy wear to the central figure of Britannia and the legend, with significant loss of detail to the trident and shield. The surfaces are darkened with age and exhibit minor pitting. No protective capsule or original packaging is supplied.
