Lot 197: 100 UK Commemorative and Circulation Cupro-Nickel Crowns
A large collection (100) of UK cupro-nickel crown coins, primarily comprising mid-to-late 20th-century commemorative issues. The group includes numerous Winston Churchill commemorative crowns featuring the M. GILLICK effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the legend ELIZABETH II D G REG F D on the obverse, with the portrait of Churchill on the reverse. Also present are 1977 Silver Jubilee crowns with the equestrian portrait and the legend ELIZABETH II DG REG FD 1977, and 1981 Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer wedding crowns inscribed H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES AND LADY DIANA SPENCER 1981. One specimen is housed in a green presentation case with a white printed label reading 1947 H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH II H.R.H. THE PRINCE PHILIP DUKE OF EDINBURGH 1972 SILVER WEDDING CROWN. Other individual coins are contained in red plastic presentation cases or clear numismatic flips. The collection features coins with milled edges and varied surface finishes. No maker’s marks or fineness stamps are visible; all coins are identified as cupro-nickel based on standard issue specifications for these types.
Condition report:
The collection exhibits a range of conditions. The Winston Churchill crowns show signs of circulation, including surface contact marks and minor rim nicks (photo 1). The 1977 and 1981 issues generally retain more original mint lustre, though some show fine surface scratches and light environmental toning (photo 2). The 1972 Silver Wedding crown in the green case appears to be in uncirculated condition with minimal handling marks (photo 1). Several coins show visible dark tarnish or spotting to the surfaces (photo 4). The collection is supplied in a variety of storage formats including plastic album leaves, individual protective flips, and presentation cases as described.
