Lot 199: UK 1797 George III Cartwheel Twopence Coin
A UK 1797 George III twopence copper coin, commonly referred to as a cartwheel issue due to its distinctive wide, raised rim. The obverse features a laurel-wreathed bust of King George III facing right, with the incised legend GEORGIUS III ∙ D : G ∙ REX . on the raised rim. The reverse depicts a seated figure of Britannia facing left, holding a trident and an olive branch, with a Union Jack shield at her side and a small sailing ship visible in the background. The reverse rim is incised with the legend BRITANNIA. and the date 1797. The coin is notable for its substantial thickness and large diameter, characteristic of the Soho Mint production.
Condition report:
The coin shows signs of heavy circulation and environmental exposure. The obverse exhibits significant wear to the high points of the portrait, particularly the laurel wreath and facial features, with numerous small contact marks and surface pitting across the field. The reverse shows similar heavy wear to the figure of Britannia and the shield, with the date and legends remains legible despite flattening. Several small edge knocks and bruises are visible around the raised rim on both faces. The copper has a dark brown aged patina with areas of verdigris or environmental residue in the recessed areas of the design. No protective capsule or packaging is included.
