Lot 128: A 1914-1919 British Victory Medal
A British campaign medal of circular form, struck in metal with a suspension loop at the top. The obverse depicts a full-length winged figure representing Victory, shown with the left arm extended and holding a palm branch in the right hand. The reverse features a circular laurel wreath bordering a central inscription. The legend is struck in capital letters and reads THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919, followed by a series of five small dots. The suspension is of the standard barrel-shaped variety. No recipient naming is legible on the rim in the provided images, and no maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the surfaces.
Condition report:
The medal exhibits significant signs of environmental exposure and heavy oxidation. The obverse shows substantial surface loss and pitting, with the finer details of the figure and field obscured by dark patination and corrosion (photo 1). The reverse displays extensive verdigris and loss of the original finish, particularly to the left side and around the wreath border, though the central inscription remains partially legible (photo 2). There are visible contact marks and pitting across both surfaces. The original ribbon is missing.
