Lot 110: A Stanley No. 5 1/2 Bailey Jack Plane, Made in England
A metal jack plane featuring a wooden tote and knob. The tool is a No. 5 1/2 model, designed with a wide body and adjustable frog. The component parts include a steel iron, a chip breaker, a lateral adjustment lever, and a lever cap with a notched screw hole. The toe of the metal body is cast with the word BAILEY in block letters. Behind the front knob, the casting reads MADE IN ENGLAND. The heel is cast with the model designation No 5 1/2. The lever cap is marked with the name STANLEY within a rectangular border. The top of the iron is stamped with a STANLEY wordmark in a notched rectangle, followed by MADE IN ENGLAND and the instruction 25° BEVEL FOR GEN. GRINDING. The lateral adjustment lever is vertically stamped with the word STANLEY. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The tool shows signs of heavy use and age-related wear. The metal body and frog exhibit significant surface oxidation and loss of the original black japanning (photo 1). The wooden tote and knob have substantial loss of finish, showing numerous scuffs, scratches, and ground-in workshop debris (photo 3). The lever cap shows pitting and degradation to the plated finish (photo 2). The iron and chip breaker have visible surface rust and require cleaning and sharpening. Mechanical components, including the lateral lever and adjustment wheel, appear intact but have not been tested for precision.
