Lot 109: A Record A151 Spokeshave and Two Metal Planes
This lot comprises three woodworking tools featuring a spokeshave and two metal planes. The spokeshave is a flat-bottomed model featuring a twin-screw adjustment mechanism for the blade. The body is finished in blue paint and is marked with the cast legend RECORD No A151. The lever cap is impressed with a mark reading RECORD MADE IN ENGLAND. The lot further includes a larger metal plane with a detachable front section and a textured rear grip. The side of the body features a cast rectangular frame containing the characters STANLEY. The tool is fitted with a pivoting locking lever and a thumb-screw blade adjustment. A smaller bullnose plane is also included, featuring a curved palm rest and a knurled adjustment screw for the lever cap; no maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on this third item.
Condition report:
The tools show signs of heavy use and significant environmental exposure. The Record spokeshave has chips to the blue painted finish, particularly around the throat and handles (photo 3), with light oxidation present on the adjustment screws and blade. The Stanley plane exhibits heavy surface rust, pitting, and oxidation across the entire body, sole, and handle (photo 2). The smaller bullnose plane shows similar heavy oxidation and surface rust throughout the metal surfaces (photo 4). All blades are present but require significant cleaning and sharpening.
