Lot 111: A Set of Record No. 050 Combination Plane Cutters
A set of metal woodworking plane cutters for use with a combination plane, housed in a blue vinyl-coated fabric roll with clear plastic interior pockets. The collection includes various profiles including plough, tonguing, and beading irons. Each cutter is constructed from polished metal with a rectangular tang featuring a rectangular notch for the plane’s adjustment mechanism. The individual cutters are stamped with the maker’s name and origin: [RECORD], MADE IN, and ENGLAND. The interior of the case is gold-tone stamped with profile categories and fractional sizes: BEADING 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 7/16; TONGUING 1/4; and PLOUGH 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 5/8, 7/8. The exterior flap of the roll is stamped RECORD Nº 050 COMBINATION PLANE CUTTERS. A single metal snap fastener is present for closure.
Condition report:
The cutters show signs of age and storage, including scattered surface oxidation and light rust, most notably on the lower edges and faces of the larger plough and beading irons (photos 2 and 3). The metal surfaces exhibit light abrasions and some tarnish to the stamped areas. The blue vinyl roll is intact but shows minor staining and surface wear. The clear plastic interior sleeves show some clouding, minor cracking, and orange-tinted discoloration consistent with contact with oxidised metal. The metal snap fastener shows surface tarnish and loss of finish.
