Lot 101: A Metal Chess Set with Wooden Board and Storage Case
A complete metal chess set featuring thirty-two pieces in two contrasting finishes, one appearing in a silver-toned metallic finish and the other in a brass-toned metallic finish. The set follows a Staunton-influenced design, with the knights featuring detailed equine heads and the kings and queens topped with traditional coronet and cross finials. The pieces are of cast construction with a textured, antiqued surface and are finished with red felt pads to the bases. The accompanying wooden board features a dark-stained outer frame and a playing surface of alternating light and dark wood squares. The set is housed in a red flocked, vacuum-formed plastic storage tray designed to hold each piece individually. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the pieces, the board, or the storage tray.
Condition report:
The chess pieces show some surface patination and wear to the metallic finishes consistent with use (photo 4). The wooden board exhibits visible surface wear, including multiple scuff marks and shallow scratches to the dark squares and the outer frame (photo 1). The red flocking on the storage tray shows thinning and areas of loss, particularly around the edges of the individual compartments where the underlying white plastic is exposed (photo 5). All thirty-two red felt base pads remain attached to the pieces. The external lid or box for the storage tray is not present.
