Lot 39: A Large Centre Bowl with Imari Style Decoration

A large centre bowl, of circular form with a slightly flared rim and a low foot ring. The bowl is decorated in the Imari style using a palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamel, and gilding. The exterior body is divided into panels featuring floral medallions on a cobalt blue ground with gilded scrolling motifs. These panels are separated by areas of dense, iron-red scrolling tendrils and gilded foliage. The interior is decorated with three sprays of berries and leaves around a central floral motif. Three marks are visible on the base: a blurred blue underglaze stamp in the shape of a shield or crest, which is not legible as a name; the digits 1629 over the letter P in red enamel; and a single horizontal blue stroke. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
