Lot 53: UK 1797 George III Cartwheel Coin
A 1797 UK coin, featuring a broad, raised rim with incuse lettering. The obverse depicts a laureate bust of George III facing right, encircled by the struck legend GEORGIUS III · D : G · REX . The reverse shows a seated figure of Britannia facing left, holding a trident and olive branch with a shield at her side. The legend BRITANNIA is struck into the upper rim, with the date 1797 appearing at the base. The coin has a dark, mottled patina. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The coin shows signs of heavy circulation and environmental exposure. The obverse displays significant wear to the portrait and legends, with visible surface pitting and rim bruises (photo 2). The reverse exhibits flattening of the Britannia figure and trident, with extensive surface pitting and contact marks (photo 1). No protective capsule or packaging is supplied.
