A mid-20th century Japanese porcelain teacup and saucer set, of circular form with a gradient orange and yellow lustre finish. The teacup features a curved handle and rims finished in a contrasting iridescent lavender-blue lustre. The exterior of the cup and the well of the saucer are decorated with hand-painted bird motifs within scalloped cartouches, depicting a bird with blue, yellow, and red-brown plumage perched on a branch with red berries, surrounded by red floral sprigs. The base of the teacup bears a red printed mark reading MADE IN JAPAN in two lines. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.

Condition report:
The set shows signs of age and use. Fine crazing is visible to the glaze on the interior base of the cup and the centre of the saucer. Minor surface scratches are present in the well of the saucer. Small dark firing specks and minor pitting manufacturing defects are visible on the surface of both pieces. There is brown staining to the interior bottom of the cup and around the exterior foot rim. The iridescent lustre finish on the handle and rims shows evidence of rubbing and wear. The printed mark on the base is slightly smudged.
