Lot 272: An English Claytondale China Hexagonal Lidded Jar and Hand Bell
This lot comprises an English china hexagonal lidded jar and matching hand bell. Each piece features hand-painted still-life fruit decoration, including peaches, plums, and berries, set against a shaded ochre and peach ground. The jar is of hexagonal form with a stepped base and a fitted lid topped with a pointed finial featuring gold-toned highlights. The matching hand bell is similarly decorated and is fitted with a gold-toned handle. The base of the jar bears a printed black mark featuring the word CLAYTONDALE arched above a circular device containing the text MADE IN ENGLAND. The word CHINA is printed below this circle. To the right is a graphic representation of a painter’s palette with brushes, surrounded by the text HAND DECORATED. A hand-painted monogram in brown pigment, reading MC, is located above the palette graphic. No other marks are visible.
Condition report:
The ceramic bodies of both the jar and the bell show no visible chips, cracks, or crazing (photo 1). The hand-painted fruit decoration remains vibrant and intact across all surfaces. The gold-toned highlights on the finial, rims, and handle show no significant signs of rubbing or loss (photo 1). No evidence of professional restoration is visible.
