Lot 269: A Hose St. Pottery Two-Handled Cup, Tunstall
A Hose St. Pottery cup, of cylindrical form featuring a flared pedestal base and two ornate C-scroll handles with thumb rests. The body is decorated with a bright yellow ground and hand-painted golden-brown flourishes, with a central circular reserve containing a polychrome transfer-printed pastoral scene. This scene depicts a romantic couple in 18th-century style attire reclining in a grassy landscape with three lambs. The handles, top rim, and base are finished with a metallic finish. The base bears a red printed backstamp depicting a coiled hose motif within a circular border reading HOSE ST. POTTERY, TUNSTALL, STOKE ON TRENT. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The cup is in good overall condition. The ceramic body shows no visible chips, cracks, or crazing. The transfer-printed decoration and yellow ground remain vibrant. Minor surface rubbing is present on the metallic finish of the base rim (photo 1). The interior is clean and free of staining.
