A mid-20th-century Mexican 925 silver sunburst motif brooch, featuring a dual-purpose design with an integrated pendant bail. The piece is constructed as a spiralling pinwheel with sixteen radiating petals, featuring alternating inlays of iridescent abalone shell and polished black onyx set within silver channels. A central circular black cabochon, likely onyx or obsidian, is bezel-set at the centre. The reverse of the brooch is stamped with two circular marks: one reading STERLING MEXICO with 925 in the centre, and another reading HECHO EN MEXICO with 925 in the centre. The brooch is fitted with a hinged pin stem and a rolling safety catch. It includes a fixed bail at the 12 o’clock position for use as a pendant and an attached fine link safety chain terminating in a secondary small safety
Condition report:
The brooch is in good vintage condition. The 925 silver shows moderate tarnish and a natural patina throughout, particularly on the reverse. There are fine surface scratches to the metal and the surfaces of the inlay consistent with age and wear. All abalone shell and onyx sections appear intact and securely set. The pin mechanism, safety catch, and safety chain are functional.
