Coins, Gold & Silver Bullion Auction
A 1979 proof coinage set of Great Britain and Northern Ireland issued by the Royal Mint. The set contains six decimal denominations: a heptagonal 50 pence, 10 pence, 5 pence, 2 pence, 1 penny, and 1/2 penny. The collection includes a square copper-toned commemorative medallion featuring a crown and the inscription Elizabeth R 1979. Each coin’s obverse displays the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, surrounded by the Latin legend ELIZABETH II D·G·REG·F·D·1979. The 50p, 10p, and 5p coins are struck in cupro-nickel with a cameo proof finish featuring frosted motifs against mirrored fields. The 2p, 1p, and 1/2p denominations are struck in bronze. The set is housed in its original clear plastic display case with a red textured insert and is accompanied by the original blue cardboard outer sleeve bearing the silver-coloured inscription COINAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN & NORTHERN IRELAND 1979.
Condition report:
The cupro-nickel denominations remain in uncirculated proof condition with sharp frosted details. The bronze denominations (2p, 1p, 1/2p) and the commemorative medallion show significant age-related toning and oxidation, appearing in shades of deep orange and dark brown, which is characteristic of the storage environment for this specific set. The plastic case is intact with no visible cracks, and the outer card sleeve shows minor shelf wear and light edge rubbing.
