A United Kingdom silver shilling dated 1817, catalogued as KM# 666. Struck during the Great Recoinage of 1816-1817, the obverse features the laureate Bull Head portrait of King George III facing right. The Latin legend reads GEOR: III D:G: BRITT: REX F.D. The reverse depicts a crowned and garnished shield of arms within the Garter, which is inscribed with the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The coin is composed of sterling silver and features a reeded edge. The surfaces exhibit heavy, dark, and uneven grey-black toning across both faces.
Condition report:
Very fine. Circulated wear is visible on the high points of the obverse portrait, specifically the laurel wreath and hair, and on the central details of the reverse shield. The coin retains a natural, dark patina with no evidence of professional cleaning. The fields show minor marks consistent with age and circulation.
