This sterling silver sixpence was issued in the UK in 1696 during the reign of William III. It was struck at the Chester mint, identified by the capital C located beneath the bust, as part of the Great Recoinage. The obverse features a laureate and draped bust of the King facing right, surrounded by the Latin legend GVLIELMVS III DEI GRA. The reverse displays four crowned shields in a cruciform arrangement representing the arms of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, with the small shield of Nassau at the centre. The reverse legend reads MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX 1696. This coin is composed of 0.925 fineness sterling silver.
Condition report:
Circulated state. Significant wear is evident on the high relief areas, specifically the King\'s portrait and the crowns on the reverse. A prominent horizontal scratch is present across the obverse through the neck of the bust. The surfaces exhibit overall pitting and dark toning. Despite the wear, the primary legends, mint mark, and date remain legible.
