This vintage portable reel-to-reel tape recorder features a BSR Monardeck tape transport system, commonly identified as a TD2 variant. The unit is housed in a suitcase-style wooden cabinet covered in black textured Rexine with a matching carrying handle and metal latches. The control panel is finished in black with gold-tone decorative detailing and includes two translucent, tiered control knobs with gold inserts for volume and on-off/tone functions. Functional controls consist of a joystick-style transport lever, a superimpose toggle switch with a red indicator lamp, and a rectangular record level magic eye window. Connection points include three 1/4-inch jack sockets for microphone, radio, and extension speaker inputs. The recorder is accompanied by two plastic tape reels, with one bearing Scotch branding and the other a Gevaert label. This configuration is strongly associated with the Defiant brand of the early 1960s.
Condition report:
The exterior Rexine covering shows signs of age-related wear, including surface scuffing and minor lifting at the corners. There is light oxidation visible on the metal latches and some screw heads. The internal control panel and deck appear in good cosmetic order, though light dust is present. The item is sold as a vintage electronic piece for decorative or restoration purposes; mechanical and electrical functions are untested and professional servicing is advised.
