A two-bottle wooden Tantalus set featuring two square-bodied lead crystal decanters. The frame is crafted from dark-stained wood with brass corner mounts and a brass swing handle. The front includes a hinged locking panel with a brass escutcheon and a matching key. The decanters are decorated with broad diamond-cut patterns to the lower portion and radial sunburst cutting to the bases, each topped with a large multi-faceted ball stopper. Each decanter is etched with architectural scenes and text. One decanter is marked 77 Arkwright Road and the other ASLEF Headquarters. This address in Hampstead, London, served as the national headquarters for the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) trade union from 1921 until 2021.
Condition report:
The wooden frame shows light surface wear, minor scratches, and oxidation to the brass hardware consistent with age and use. The glass decanters are clear and free of significant cloudiness or visible chips. The locking mechanism appears functional.
