A silver-toned commemorative medal honouring Charlemagne. The obverse features a left-facing crowned portrait of the emperor, Carolus Magnus, holding a vertical sword in his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left. The legend reads CAROLVS MAGNVS with the dates 742-814 inscribed at the base. The reverse displays a map of the Carolingian Empire with a superimposed imperial eagle. The German legend DAS REICH DER KAROLINGER surrounds the map, which identifies locations including NAVARRA, SINIG, MOUEN, UTRECNT, CRAC, and AUG-VIND. A small maker’s mark consisting of the initials KG is visible in the left field of the reverse.
Condition report:
The medal displays sharp details and well-defined devices. There is significant dark peripheral toning present on both the obverse and reverse surfaces. Minor surface marks and light scratches are visible upon close inspection.
