A mid-20th century four-string banjo-ukulele, commonly referred to as a banjolele. The instrument is constructed with a circular wooden resonator body and a vellum skin head, held in place by a metal tension ring and eight screw-down brackets. It features a stained hardwood neck with a fretted fingerboard and a simple headstock with four top-mounted tuning pegs. A wooden bridge is positioned on the skin head. There are no visible maker’s marks, labels, or serial numbers on the exterior of the instrument. The instrument is accompanied by a period hard-shell case featuring a blue plush-lined interior.
Condition report:
The instrument is in aged vintage condition. The vellum skin head shows surface discolouration and staining consistent with age. One string is currently broken and detached. The woodwork on the body and neck displays minor surface scuffs and general wear. The case shows significant external wear, including scuffing to the outer covering and corrosion to the metal latches and hinges. The interior lining is faded but remains largely intact.
