Lot 246:
Description
A hand-carved walking stick fashioned from a dense dark hardwood, consistent with African blackwood or ebony. The handle is carved in the form of a stylized elephant head, featuring a trunk that curves back towards the shaft and small white circular inlays to represent eyes. The upper portion of the shaft is embellished with white dot inlays arranged in a geometric pattern below the collar. The lower half of the shaft transitions into a spirally-carved barley twist design, which is also accented with white dot insets. This item is characteristic of East African woodcarving traditions, often produced for the decorative and export markets. The white inlays appear to be made of bone or a synthetic material.
Condition report:
The walking stick is in good overall condition, showing minor surface wear, light scuffing, and small scratches consistent with age and handling. The wood retains a deep colour and the decorative insets appear to be largely intact.
