Lot 245:
Description
A horizontally oriented silk embroidery panel depicting the classic mythological scene of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea (Ba Xian Guo Hai). The composition features eight figures standing upon a large, gnarled, dragon-form branch or log as they traverse stylized white waves. Each figure is depicted with their traditional attributes, including He Xiangu with a lotus flower, Han Xiangzi playing a flute, and Lan Caihe with a flower basket. To the upper left, two cranes are shown in flight. The work is executed in a palette of pink, green, blue, and cream threads against a deep teal-coloured silk ground. An inscription in the upper right corner contains four large characters: 八仙過海 (Ba Xian Guo Hai), which translates to Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. The panel is presented in a black wooden frame with a decorative gold-toned patterned mount. A typed label is attached to the glass.
Condition report:
The embroidery appears to be in good overall condition with well-preserved colours. The piece has not been examined outside of the frame. There is minor surface wear and dust present on the frame. Visible reflections on the glass are due to external lighting conditions.
