Lot 226:
Description
This work is an oil on stretched canvas landscape by the artist M. le Grange, depicting a traditional Cape Dutch farmstead. The composition features a group of characteristic white-walled cottages with thatched roofs, situated in a sprawling rural valley beside a calm body of water. To the left, tall trees with pale bark and yellowish-green foliage are rendered with visible texture. In the distance, a prominent mountain range rises in soft hues of blue and violet. The artist utilises a naturalistic palette of colours and an impressionistic style, characterised by loose, expressive brushwork and areas of impasto in the foreground vegetation. The painting is signed M. le Grange in the lower right corner and is housed in a contemporary decorative gilt frame with a beaded inner border. Based on the 24-inch (60 cm) steel rule visible in the foreground, the canvas size is approximately 61 cm x 91 cm.
61 cm x 91 cm.
Condition report:
The painting is in good overall condition. The canvas remains well-tensioned on its stretcher with no visible sagging. The paint surface is stable, showing no prominent craquelure, flaking, or pigment loss. There is no evidence of repair or restoration under visual inspection. The contemporary gilt frame is in good condition with only minor surface wear to the edges.
