Lot 101:
Description
A collection of philatelic-numismatic covers (PNCs) issued by Mercury, Watford, to commemorate the centenary of the Return of Sherlock Holmes. Each cover features an embedded silver-toned cupro-nickel crown coin with designs marking the 100th anniversary of the character’s return. The covers are franked with two postage stamps: a 1p maroon Queen Elizabeth II Machin definitive and an illustrated stamp depicting narrative scenes from the Sherlock Holmes canon, including The Reigate Squire and The Six Napoleons. All items bear a pictorial silhouette postmark from 221B Baker Street, London, dated 5 May 1995. The card envelopes include reproductions of Collier’s magazine covers and are marked with the serial number M 00713.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good condition. There is evidence of minor foxing and light spotting to the white card surfaces. The coins appear to be in uncirculated condition as issued within their protective housings.
