Description

This 925 silver lidded tankard, dated 1771, features a classic baluster-shaped body with a hinged domed lid. The lid is surmounted by a scroll-form thumbpiece and the vessel is fitted with an ornate C-scroll handle. The piece is supported by a spreading circular foot decorated with gadrooning around the base. Hallmarks located on the base include the lion passant for sterling purity, the leopard’s head for the London assay office, a duty mark depicting a sovereign’s profile, and a date letter S.

Condition report:

The item exhibits significant surface tarnish and a dark patina consistent with age. There is visible green residue around the joints and handle. The tankard appears structurally sound.
