Lot 2: UK 1973 Elizabeth II 50 Pence Coin, Accession to EEC

This auction ended on 11 October 2026.

Start price: £5

Buyer's Premium: 18%

A pair of UK 1973 cupro-nickel 50 pence coins, featuring the commemorative reverse design by David Wynne. The coins are of heptagonal form with a plain edge. The obverse of each piece bears the second decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, though this side is not visible in the orientation shown. The reverse displays a central ring containing the legend 1973 50 PENCE, surrounded by a motif of nine interlocking hands representing the member nations of the European Economic Community. The coins exhibit a bright metallic luster and were struck to commemorate the United Kingdom’s accession to the EEC. No maker’s marks or third-party grading labels are present.

Condition report:

The coins show signs of light circulation and handling. Both reverses exhibit fine contact marks and minor surface abrasions across the raised interlocking hands and the central field. The metallic surfaces retain a bright luster, though light environmental toning is present in the recessed areas of the design. No significant edge knocks or deep gouges are visible. The coins are not housed in protective capsules or packaging.
