Lot 81: A Hardwood Drop Leaf Dining Table and Several Matching Chairs
Not sold
A dining set comprising an oval drop-leaf table and several high-back chairs, constructed from stained hardwood. The table features an oval top with two drop-leaves, supported by a heavy turned pedestal base and a cross-stretchered foot arrangement. The chairs are designed with elaborate decorative elements including carved crest rails featuring arched foliate motifs, turned bobbin spindles, and ball finials. One chair is upholstered with a floral tapestry-style fabric cushion, while another shows a seat constructed of horizontal wooden slats. The furniture demonstrates traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenon joints and visible circular wooden dowel plugs. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The set is in mixed condition with several structural and surface issues. One chair is fully disassembled with the seat detached and separate from the frame (photo 1). The table top shows scattered scuffs and scratches to the finish, particularly along the edges and joins (photo 4). A chair arm exhibits a significant loss of finish or a white mark on the curved surface (photo 5). The chair legs and stretchers show general wear and abrasions consistent with use (photo 7). The upholstered cushion appears intact but shows minor fading.
