Lot 48: A Large Carved Wood Sculpture of a Seated Cat
Not sold
A large carved wood sculpture of a seated cat, rendered in a stylised folk art manner. The figure is carved from a single block of wood, featuring a prominent vertical grain and a warm brown finish. The ears, paws, and tail are finished with a dark stain to provide contrast. The cat is depicted in a rigid upright posture with front legs held straight and the tail curled around the right side of the body. The head features wide-set eyes with painted black pupils, an incised rounded snout, whisker details, and a whimsical upturned mouth. The underside of the paws shows the natural wood grain and evidence of the carving process. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Height: 58 cm
Width: 22 cm
Depth: 25 cm.
Condition report:
The sculpture shows signs of handling and surface wear. Small scattered chips and scuff marks are visible on the tips of the ears and the end of the tail (photo 1). There is light rubbing to the stained finish on the edges of the paws (photo 1) and small white scuff marks on the rear of the body (photo 3). The structural integrity remains sound with no evidence of major cracks or repairs.
