A UK Bank of England one pound banknote, Portrait Series A. The obverse features a seated Britannia vignette within a decorative frame at the left, the denomination numeral 1 at the right, and the central legend BANK OF ENGLAND PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF ONE POUND. The note bears two serial numbers printed in red ink, C49L 490797, and the printed signature of L. K. O’BRIEN followed by the title CHIEF CASHIER. The reverse displays a linear architectural depiction of the Bank of England building at Threadneedle Street, London, set above elaborate acanthus leaf scrolls. Two circular vignettes depicting Saint George and the Dragon are positioned to either side of the lower scrollwork. The watermark area is a plain circular field at the lower centre.

Condition report:

The banknote exhibits signs of extensive circulation including multiple sharp vertical and horizontal folds and general creasing across the paper surface. Handling marks are present, and there is visible foxing and light brown staining at the margins, most notably on the reverse side. The paper retains some original colour but has lost its crispness. The note is not slabbed or held in a protective capsule.
