Lot 39: A 1936 Art Deco Ceramic Partial Dinner Service, Geometric Decoration
Not sold
This lot comprises a 1936 glazed ceramic partial dinner service, featuring a minimalist Art Deco geometric pattern. The service includes two lidded vegetable tureens, an open serving bowl, a gravy boat, and multiple stacks of plates in three sizes. The decoration consists of hand-painted green triangles flanked by black diagonal and horizontal lines on a cream ground, finished with a thin black rim line. The lidded tureens and gravy boat are designed with stepped geometric handles, and the tureen lid handles feature a stylised black sunburst motif. The underside of a tureen base is printed in black with REGD. NO. 811861 and a hand-painted pattern number 2404. A small hand-painted letter y and two black dots are also present on the base. No maker’s name is printed on the items.
Width: 25 cm (tureen handle to handle)
Diameter: 23 cm – 25 cm (dinner plates).
Condition report:
The service shows signs of age with fine crazing visible to the glaze on several pieces, most notably the gravy boat and the interior of the tureens (photo 3). One tureen is missing its lid. There is minor wear to the black painted rims and scattered surface marks consistent with handling (photo 1). The stacks of plates appear structurally sound, although individual surfaces are not all visible.
