Lot 37: A Set of Nine Art Nouveau Glazed Earthenware Tiles
This lot comprises a set of nine glazed earthenware tiles of square form, featuring tube-lined decoration in the Art Nouveau style. Each tile is finished with a deep translucent bottle-green glaze. The central motif consists of a stylized bouquet of three yellow and orange roses with shaded pale green leaves, bound by a pale yellow-to-green ribbon terminating in scrolled ends. The raised tube-lining defines the floral and foliate outlines, with multi-coloured glazes applied to the petals and leaves. The reverse of the tiles and the edges are obscured by original white expanded polystyrene packaging and stacking. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the displayed surfaces.
Condition report:
The visible display tile and the upper edges of the stacked tiles show significant crazing to the glaze throughout, which is a feature of the lead glazes used on earthenware of this type (photo 1). Several tiles in the stack exhibit small deposits of white plaster or mortar residue along the top edges (photo 2). There is minor pitting visible in the dark green glaze on the face of the primary tile (photo 1). No major chips or cracks are visible on the decorated faces of the set.
