A Spanish colonial 8 reales coin, commonly referred to as a pillar dollar or columnario, which has been converted into a brooch. The obverse features a crowned Spanish coat of arms flanked by the letters J and M to the left and the numeral 8 to the right. The struck Latin legend reads: CAROLUS·III·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·REX. The reverse depicts the crowned hemispheres of the world between two pillars entwined with scrolls, resting on stylized waves. The reverse legend reads: VTRAQUE VNVM, followed by the mint mark LM, the date 1768, and the repeated mint mark. The coin is fitted with a hinged pin and C-clasp fastener soldered across the reverse. A small metal ring is attached to the upper edge, connected to a safety chain and a safety pin. The edge of the coin displays a corded laurel leaf pattern. No hallmarks or fineness marks are visible on the coin or the jewellery fittings.

Condition report:

The coin shows signs of environmental exposure and handling. The obverse displays significant wear to the high points of the crown and coat of arms, with dark tarnish concentrated around the rim and legend (photos 1 and 3). The reverse shows heavy tarnish and dark toning, particularly surrounding the soldered pin hinge and clasp (photos 2 and 4). There are visible contact marks and surface scratches consistent with circulation and use as jewellery. The pin fastener is bent (photo 2). The coin is not held in a protective case or capsule.
