Lot 279: A Collection of UK 1992 One ECU Commemorative Tokens

A set of four regional commemorative tokens struck in yellow metal. The obverse of each piece features a distinct regional motif representing the nations of the United Kingdom: a knight on horseback for ENGLAND; a female figure with a harp for N. IRELAND; a unicorn with a shield for SCOTLAND; and a bust of Edward the Black Prince for WALES. Each obverse is inscribed ONE ECU and 1992. The Wales token additionally bears the motto ICH DIEN and the text EDWARD THE BLACK PRINCE. The reverse of each token is uniform, featuring two figures supporting a globe surrounded by twelve stars. The reverse legends read EUROPE, EUROPA, and the respective regional name: ENGLAND, N. IRELAND, SCOTLAND, or WALES. The edges are milled. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The tokens appear in uncirculated condition, retaining original luster. The obverses show minor surface contact marks and light handling wear, particularly visible on the raised elements of the designs. The reverses exhibit similar minor contact marks consistent with storage. No evidence of cleaning or environmental damage is visible. The tokens are presented without protective capsules or original packaging.
