Lot 264: A Set of Six Crown Tools Woodturning Chisels and Gouges
Not sold
A set of six woodturning tools, featuring high-speed steel blades fitted to turned hardwood handles. The collection includes a large roughing gouge with a deep U-shaped profile, alongside various scrapers and a parting tool. The handles are secured with brass ferrules. The largest handle bears a gold-toned circular mark containing a crown logo, with the text CROWN TOOLS above and SHEFFIELD ENGLAND below. Further legends beneath the circular mark read HIGH SPEED STEEL and MADE IN SHEFFIELD ENGLAND. Other handles in the set feature a smaller version of the crown logo accompanied by the characters H.S.S. The tools are housed in a simple rectangular wooden rack with circular apertures.
Condition report:
The tools show signs of light workshop use and long-term storage. The steel blades exhibit surface oxidation and patches of light rust, most notably on the large gouge (photo 3). The wooden handles are covered in a layer of surface dust and fine white speckled residue. The cutting edges are intact but show signs of wear and will require regrinding and honing before use. The brass ferrules show moderate tarnishing and surface dulling. The wooden rack shows typical workshop wear including scuffs and dust accumulation.
