Lot 236: A Fifteen-Piece Set of Hexagonal Shank Wood Auger Drill Bits
Sold for: £7
This lot comprises a set of fifteen wood auger drill bits, presented in a blue plastic fitted carry case with a folding handle and two sliding latches. The set contains eight shorter bits and seven longer bits, all featuring a hexagonal shank designed to prevent slippage during use. Each bit is constructed from metal with a polished finish to the cutting edges and a black coating within the flutes. The bits are designed with screw-point tips and wide helical flutes for deep-hole boring in timber. Several bits bear stamped numeric markings indicating their diameter, with legible characters including 25, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, and 6. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the bits or the storage case.
Condition report:
The bits show signs of use and workshop storage, with areas of surface oxidation and light rust visible on the screw tips and cutting heads (photo 1). The cutting edges appear generally intact, though one bit has a section of white adhesive tape wrapped around the upper flute (photo 2). The blue plastic case shows superficial scuffs, scratches, and surface dirt consistent with handling (photo 1). The set is housed in its original molded plastic carry case.
