Lot 6: A Trio of Stoneware Containers including Godshill Cider Company Flagon
This lot comprises three stoneware storage containers, each featuring a cream-coloured salt-glazed body and a dark brown slip-glazed upper section. The first is a cylindrical storage jar decorated with a black transfer-printed illustration of kitchenalia and vegetables, including a salt shaker, garlic, and herbs, above the text STORE JAR. The second is a lidded honey jar of slightly tapered form, complete with a knop-handled lid. The front bears black transfer-printed text reading FINEST NATIVE FOREST HONEY, TAWARI, NEW ZEALAND HONEY, NET WEIGHT 12 OZ (340g), accompanied by a small floral motif. The third item is a cider flagon with a strap handle and a ceramic screw-top stopper featuring a cogged edge. The body is decorated with blue transfer-printed text reading GODSHILL CIDER COMPANY, ISLE OF WIGHT. The brown slip glaze on the flagon shows natural variations in thickness and vertical streaks from the glazing process. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The stoneware items show signs of use and age. The store jar (left) displays visible surface crazing to the cream body and rim. The honey jar (centre) appears in good order with a glossy finish to the lid and shoulder, showing minor firing imperfections common to the material. The cider flagon (right) retains its original ceramic stopper; a small surface pit or firing flaw is visible on the lower left of the cream body (photo 2). The transfer-printed labels remain legible across all three pieces.
