Lot 43: A Mason's Ironstone Jug and Basin Set in Chartreuse Pattern
A two-piece ironstone wash set comprising a jug and a matching basin. The footed basin features a scalloped rim, and the bulbous jug is designed with a flared, scalloped mouth. Both components are finished in an off-white glaze and decorated with the Chartreuse pattern, which consists of transfer-printed and hand-painted floral sprays in green and teal tones with gilded accents to the foliage and rims. The underside of the basin bears a printed green mark featuring a crown above a banner reading IRONSTONE MADE IN ENGLAND, below which is a copyright symbol and the script text CHARTREUSE, followed by PRINTED AND HAND PAINTED. A single green character N is also present. The jug bears similar printed decoration but no legible marks are visible on its base.
Condition report:
The jug displays a significant vertical crack extending from the shoulder down through the body (photo 3). Both the jug and basin exhibit visible crazing to the glaze throughout the interior and exterior surfaces. There is rubbing and loss to the gilding, particularly along the scalloped rims of both pieces. Minor shelf wear and darkening are present on the unglazed foot rims.
